Only having a small amount of money to his name, Jim Penman started a part-time residential mowing venture while gaining a degree in history. After this, he began Balwyn Gardening, which was afterwards renamed Jim’s Mowing, as a full-time company in the early 80′s. The Jim’s system was enough of a success to be duplicated across many other sectors, with the Jim’s Group establishing offices for all manner of business and family services between 1994 and this day. He originally focused simply at employing subcontractors, though his company grew and Jim gradually began to specialize in the establishing and promoting of lawn mowing routes – having over a hundred after many years.

By the end of the ’80s Jim Penman made his business a franchise and since then the growth of Jim’s Mowing has been rapid. The change to just offering franchises began from a need to provide the best customer service, and with all the risk of competition in the coming of VIP Home Services.

From this humble start, initially with the thought of getting “a few bucks” by mowing other’s yards, Jim’s Mowing has grown into the world’s largest lawn mowing franchise. The franchise proved astonishingly successful, with sixty Franchisees operating by the closing of the year and established in all Australian states within the first three years. From being small and comparatively unknown, it is now the greatest and most known lawn mowing brand in the world.

The cleaning franchise was started in the ’90s and was then to be ammended with dog wash, handyman, fencing and about a dozen additional departments which then were located in Australia, New Zealand, Canada as well as great Britain. In recent years, Jim’s has started several new divisions. All these are managed as joint ventures, with experienced people providing their technical expertise and Jim’s focusing on the administration and franchising side. This has been a tremendously successful decision. A commitment to serving customer found this company increase at a quick rate having more customers than one man could efficiently control, prompting Jim to begin franchising in 1989.

He says his key to success comes from a consistent concern for the wellbeing of both customers and franchisees. Jim is married, has nine children, drives a 22-year-old car and is establishing a college.
